Honoring God with Our Lips, but Not Our Hearts

In this message, I confront a troubling reality affecting many churches today: the danger of becoming stuck in tradition. We are Honoring God with Our Lips, but Not Our Hearts. Based on personal experience and grounded in Scripture—particularly Mark 7:1–23— I explore how routines and long-held practices can quietly replace the living presence of God in our worship, leaving churches spiritually stagnant.
I recently visited a church that I hadn’t been to in years. What was once a vibrant, Spirit-filled congregation had become tired and hollow. The message, the music, the entire service—it hadn’t changed in over a decade. When I asked a leader why, their answer was telling: “It’s the way we’ve always done it.” That phrase has become a silent killer in many congregations. Tradition, once meant to preserve truth, can become a barrier to growth when it blinds us to what God is doing now.
Jesus faced the same issue with the Pharisees. They clung so tightly to their traditions that they couldn’t see the truth standing right in front of them. In Mark 7, He rebukes them, quoting Isaiah: “This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” (Mark 7:6) He exposes how their man-made rules had overridden God’s commands.
This message is a call to examine ourselves and our churches. Are we holding to God’s Word or merely clinging to habit? Are we worshipping in spirit and in truth—or just going through the motions?
Tradition isn’t evil—but when it takes the place of Spirit-led obedience, it becomes dangerous. The church must stay connected to the heart of God, always open to His direction. If we’re not careful, we risk honoring God with our lips while our hearts drift far from Him.
Let this be a wake-up call. It’s time to move from ritual back to relationship.
