If there was ever a man who loved to ask, “Why?”, it was Origen.

He lived in one of the great centers of learning in the ancient world, Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandria was where scholars from every corner of the empire gathered. Ideas were exchanged, debated, challenged, and refined.

Origen grew up in that world.

But more importantly, he grew up loving Christ.

While Origen was still a young man his father was martyred for his faith Reportedly Origen wanted to join him, but his mother prevented him from leaving home. Whether every detail of that story has come down to us exactly as it happened doesn’t really matter, because it tells us how the early Christians remembered him, not as someone chasing fame, but as someone whose devotion to Christ ran deep.

As he grew older, that same devotion took a different path.

Instead of carrying a sword, he carried a pen.

Instead of seeking applause, he sought understanding.

He devoted his life to studying Scripture, teaching others, and writing about the Christian faith. Long before printing presses, computers, or searchable libraries, Origen spent countless hours reading, comparing manuscripts, teaching students, and writing by lamplight because he believed God’s Word deserved our very best effort.
